I going to dispel this myth by showing some of the domain names i signed up and you will be surprised! Below are some of my domain names :

I am constantly looking for good domain names to signup for my future products websites. I can do that because i got a cheap domain company GoDaddy to sign up for. A lot of internet marketing gurus also used this company for domain registration.
The crux of getting a good domain name is that it is highly connected to what you are doing and not any names that you liked but not related to your business. Getting a name related to your website not only make it easier for your to get high search engine rankings but also for you to get keywords to aim.
I only recommend to get a dot com name. The reason i get a dot name domain is that someone else had already registered davewong.com so since the Godfather of Internet Marketing also used dot name domain, why shouldn’t I?
For getting a good hosting company, i would recommend Hostgator which i am using. Not only i am using it, alot of internet marketing gurus are also using it. The reason they are using it is because it is a linux based server where you have Cpanel. The plan for this hosting account is very cheap too!

yes, namecheap is another alternative but i know alot do go for GoDaddy too
