If you wish to get a higher rank with Google and various other search engines, one of the most important factors for that today is building links. In the beginning of this decade (around 2001 start) you could have done with a couple of Keywords and Meta tags to get the search engines crawling over to your site, however today it’s a very different league all together and the world of search engine optimization also known as SEO has changed significantly and for the better.

Since Google is in the business of connecting information to search terms, it works on the simple concept that when a user searches for something he/she should get the most relevant and most informative, important result. Therefore when Google introduced their Page ranking system they had only one thing in mind, it was ‘importance’.

Now Google while determining which all sites are important uses back links as the means to finding it. Authority sites usually carry the most important and valuable information that people in that niche or the market are looking for and therefore they get lots of links from other relevant sites. However the whole back link theory in the world of SEO is a bit distorted because it can be manipulated. No longer is waiting for natural back links the way to play the game. Only by actively building back links and that too especially in niche markets can one stay competitive. Once a site achieves page one rankings on either Google or Yahoo it can generate a lot of traffic to the site. The benefits of such traffic are many as not only is it free but also targeted and will end up with much higher conversion rate than the normal and run of the mill advertising campaigns where you have to pay for getting the traffic.

There are 3 main factors in building links that will help you get great ranks and lots of traffic.

1 Page rank: the most important factor is to get links from sites which have high Google page rank. It is based on the simple logic that if an important site thinks linking to your site is important enough for them, then you would indeed be important.

2 Relevance: since Google’s algorithms have been becoming smarter, they have become so at finding out the relevance of sites. No longer do random links play any important role, only links from authority sites in your market, niche or category sites is worth the effort.

3 Anchor Text: try searching “click here” and you will find Adobe Acrobat as number 1 in Google because millions of sites use the anchor text “click here” to link to the download page of adobe acrobat. So remember when you are building links that it’s important to use your keywords and the keyword phrases in the anchor text.

A good mix strategy for link building is to focus 60% of your effort on quality and 40% on quantity. However, the most important thing still is to get links because it is the only thing that will get you money and help you get ranked.
