Spam filters were created to keep our inboxes clean and free of clutter by catching spammers and dealing with spam e-mails. This is great for us e-mailers and could also be beneficial for e-mail marketers by making them legitimate. However, spam filters could also be e-mail marketers’ enemy. Filters may not be meant to be so but they could be unfriendly to e-mail marketers and pose problems to them. But don’t worry because there are ways to dodge spam filters, and be directed to the inbox and get the recipient read your e-mail.

Write a subject that sounds professional and not scam-like.

People think that by putting a subject that’s full of flowery words, it would be more attractive and would make people to open it ASAP. But rather, the opposite happens. By putting too much drama on your subject, you are lowering the chances that your message will get opened because they would think that your promos are just plain bogus gimmicks.

Rather than writing a too cheesy subject line, offer a plain, simple, and clear description of what you’re really offering in your e-mail. You may include some teasers here and there but don’t overdo it.

Avoid overusing formatting tools.

People think that playing and experimenting with styling tools such as colors, italics, and fonts would make their e-mails more attractive to readers. However, it is more likely that your recipients wouldn’t take your e-mail seriously and would just scrap it immediately. Keep them to a minimum as much as possible. Use them not for aesthetics but more on their function. Just apply them when necessary such as when you need to emphasize a certain word or phrase. Over usage of styling tools would result to your e-mail being screened by spam filters. Also, if your offers are good, putting too much styling on your text is no longer necessary. Your offer alone would attract the recipient to open your e-mail, sans any style on the text and even if it’s written in plain text.

Keep photos to a minimum.

A good balance between text and images should be kept. Pictures may be helpful in your campaign but going overboard with using them may make your pictures work against you. Putting numerous graphics may become a hassle for your reader since there are webmail programs that do not show images by default. Buttons or links still have to be clicked in order for the recipient to view the images.

Furthermore, if your e-mail contains more images than text, spam filters would assume that your message is not legitimate because it does not have any text that it could scan. Spam filters have to scan your e-mail’s content and if it doesn’t have or have very little text to scan, the filters will opt to classify your e-mail into the spam box. Pictures should only aid your text and not replace it. Use them to make your readers understand your text through the images. Use them for their usefulness and not because of their design function.

Make your e-mail campaigns simple yet informative by bearing in mind these tips and it will definitely escape spam filters and reach your recipients’ inbox.
